Description
This course provides an in-depth review of nitrification and an overview of denitrification and biological phosphorus removal. Topics presented for nitrification include (1) groups of nitrifying bacteria, (2) need for cBOD-removing bacteria, (3) operational conditions that must be satisfied to provide for acceptable nitrification, (4) promoting nitrification, (5) recovering nitrification, (6) forms of nitrification – complete or incomplete [partial], and (6) monitoring nitrification. Denitrification addresses the four major concerns related to denitrification in a secondary clarifier (clumping) and a denitrification reactor – the anoxic condition: (1) denitrifying bacteria, (2) absence of dissolved oxygen or an oxygen gradient, (3) substrate or cBOD, and (4) oxidation-reduction potential (ORP). Biological phosphorus removal and chemical phosphorus removal are compared.
This course is sponsored by NEIWPCC in conjunction with the EPA.
