Description

Microscopic Examination of the Activated Sludge Process (5 hours) presents a review of the microscopes used in examining activated sludge as well as other waste streams to access the “health” of the process. In addition to a review of the microscopes, microscopic techniques are presented. The rationale for the use of the microscope for process control is provide along with numerous photomicrographs illustrating acceptable and non-acceptable conditions in the process. Components of the activated sludge that are review include: 1) bulk solution, 2) floc particles, 3) filaments, 4) protozoa and 5) metazoa. Worksheets and tables are provided and illustrated to guide the operator through the necessary data to be collected and used to evaluate the process.

This is a two-session course, with each session 2.5 hours in length.

By completing Microscopic Examination of the Activated Sludge Process (5 hours) the treatment plant operator will be able to identify the parts of the microscope and their functions in order to determine the type of microscope, power of magnification and need for contrast or differential staining to evaluate his/her process. The operator will be able to use the provided worksheets and tables or design his/her own worksheets and table to perform an acceptable evaluation of the activated sludge biota for process control. Also, numerous black-and-white and color photomicrographs are reproduced and provide for the operator’s use. Most importantly, the operator will be able to correlate microscopic observations to acceptable or non-acceptable operational conditions.
