Description

This class provides an introduction to the major groups of bacteria that provide the substrates for methanogens (archaea) and methanogenesis, i.e., the production of methane (CH4). The bacterial groups include hydrolytic bacteria, fermentative (acid-forming) bacteria, acetogenic bacteria (acetic acid-forming) and sulfur-reducing bacteria. The roles of each group as well as their positive and negative roles are reviewed. The class also presents the different forms of bacterial degradation of cBOD in the digester and the consequences of introducing dissolved oxygen or nitrate to the digester. Critical operational conditions including alkalinity & pH, macronutrients & micronutrients, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), temperature, volatile acids, and volatile acid-to-alkalinity ratio and inhibition and toxicity (toxic mass-to-biomass ratio) are addressed.

This course is sponsored by NEIWPCC in conjunction with the EPA.
