Description

Sludge disposal is the most expensive cost of aerobic wastewater treatment. The class examines the correlation between BOD, metabolism and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) with sludge production. The class also reviews the different forms of BOD that enters the treatment process and the fate of each form of BOD in the treatment process including its degradation to non-polluting wastes and less pollution wastes. The different quantities of sludge produced (sludge yield coefficients) by respiration and fermentation are addressed. The basic forms of bacterial respiration (aerobic, anoxic and sulfide formation) and fermentation of BOD the consequences (positive and negative) of each are presented. The use of ORP is examined as an analytical tool to determine the form of BOD degradation that is occurring in a reactor or holding tank and if that form of BOD degradation is acceptable.

This course is sponsored by NEIWPCC in conjunction with the EPA.
